January

Prior to the China-US Joint Commission Meeting on Science & Technology Cooperation, National Science Foundation of United States (NSF) consented to the request for official access of NCFC to Internet. In March, the 64Kbps special line was launched and tested.

In the early April

China-US Joint Commission Meeting on Science & Technology Cooperation was held in Washington, US. Before the meeting, Ms. Hu Qiheng, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences, reaffirmed the request for Internet access to National Science Foundation of United States (NSF) on behalf of China and this time, it was finally recognized.

April 20

The 64K international special line, via which NCFC project got access to Internet through US Sprint Company was put into operation, realizing the full-functional connection of China to Internet. Since then, China was officially recognized in the international community as a country with full-functional Internet. The event was named as one of the 1994 top ten technology news in China by Chinese news circle and listed as one of China's major scientific and technological achievements in 1994 by National Statistical Communique.

May

National Research Center for Intelligent Computing System launched Shuguang BBS, the first BBS in mainland China.

May 15

The Institute of High Energy Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences set up China's first Web server. It also launched China's first set of webpages, which not only introduced high-tech development in China, but also included a column named "Tour in China". Later, the column started to provide information with pictures and words in a wider range of fields such as news, economy, culture, business and trade and was renamed China Window.

May 21

With the assistance of Prof. Qian Tianbai and Karlsruhe University in Germany, the Computer Network Information Center of Chinese Academy of Sciences completed the configuration of server of China's national top-level domain name .CN and rewrote the history that China's .CN top-level domain name server had been placed overseas. Qian Tianbai and Qian Hualin served as Administrative Liaison Officer and Technical Liaison Officer of China's .CN domain name respectively.

June 8

General Office of the State Council distributed the Notice Concerning Related Issues on Golden Bridge Project, Golden Gateway Project and Golden Card Project to all ministries, provinces and cities. Since then, Golden Bridge Project prophase construction started comprehensively.

June 28

With the great support of Tokyo University of Science, Beijing University of Chemical Technology launched the trial special line connected to Internet.

In the early July

The experimental network of China Education and Research Network (CERNET) developed by Tsinghua University and another five higher education institutions was launched. The network adopted IP/X.25 technology, connected five cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing and Xi'an and connected to the Internet via the international outlet of NCFC, becoming a TCP/IP-running computer network.

September

Directorate General of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication and United States Department of Commerce signed an agreement on Internet, prescribing that the former would launch two 64K special lines via US Sprint Company (one in Beijing and the other in Shanghai). Construction of CHINANET kicked off.

October

CERNET that was invested by State Development Planning Commission and presided over by State Education Commission started up. The project objective was to build national infrastructure for education and scientific research, which utilizes advanced and practical computer technology and network communication technology to connect most higher education institutions and middle schools nationwide and promote the building of their campus networks and the sharing of information resources. In this way, the basic environment for China's college education and scientific research would be greatly improved and the development of related undertakings facilitated.

October

CHINANET was put into operation.

November

Annual Meeting of Asia-Pacific Network Group (APNG) that was sponsored by NCFC Administration Committee and co-organized by Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University and Tsinghua University was held in Tsinghua University. This was the first Asia-Pacific annual meeting held in China in the international Internet circle.

1994

Regulations of the People's Republic of China for Safety Protection of Computer Information Systems was officially promulgated and it was clearly indicated that classified security protection would be practiced for computer information systems.

1994

Lenovo went public at Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited. Lenovo Micro-computer Department was founded.
