January 24

The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee convened a meeting to discuss about and decide the setup of the National Security Commission. The National Security Commission is headed by Xi Jinping, according to a decision adopted at the meeting. Cyber Security has become an important part of the national security system of China.

January 27

The "Clear Action" was launched against porn and vulgar information in Beijing. Participants included Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau, Beijing Communications Administration, as well as over 30 websites including qianlong , sina .cn, sohu and 163 .

January 29

MIIT issued the second batch of licenses for virtual operators.

February

The Office of the Central Leading Group of Cyberspace Affairs was set up, headed by Chinese President Xi Jinping who pointed out that: "No Internet safety means no national security. No informatization means no modernization." . It indicated that China's Internet governance has entered into a new stage of intensified overall planning.

April

The Office of the Task Force to Eliminate Pornography and Illegal Publications, Cyberspace Administration of China , MIIT and the Ministry of Public Security jointly announced to launch the Clean Cyber Space 2014 Special Action to eradiate pornography on the Internet nationwide from mid-April to November in 2014.

To purify the environment of the Internet, MIIT, the Ministry of Public Security and the State Administration for Industry & Commerce decided to jointly launch a special action against rogue programs on mobile Internet.

At the high-level government meeting of the 50th meeting of The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), China proposed to promote Internationalization of ICANN and global Internet governance.

July

In his address to the National Congress of Brazil, Chinese President Xi Jinping said that China would like to join hands with other countries, follow the principles of mutual respect and trust, deepen international cooperation, respect cyber sovereignty, protect cyber security, create a peaceful, safe, open and collaborative cyber space and establish a multilateral, democratic and transparent international Internet governance system.

To effectively cope with increasingly serious and complicated network security threats and challenges, effectively strengthen and improve network security work, further increase the capability and level of security guarantee of the telecoms and the Internet sectors, MIIT issued the Guiding Opinion on Strengthening Network Security Work of the Telecommunication and the Internet Sectors.

The Cyberspace Administration of China held a press conference to release the Interim Provisions on the Administration of the Development of Public Information Services Provided through Instant Messaging Tools, and put it into effect on that day. The ten provisions in it regulated the services provided by instant messaging tool providers and the behaviors of users, and specified administrative requirements for public information services via instant messaging tools.

The Guiding Opinions on Promoting Integrated Development of Traditional Publication and Emerging Publication was adopted at the 4th meeting of the Central Leading Group for Comprehensively Deepening Reforms.

Guide on Cloud Computing Service Security of Information Security Technology and Capability Requirements on Cloud Computing Service Security of Information Security Technology were released, serving as the basic standards for security review of cloud computing services of government sector.

The 1st National Cyber Security Week kicked off in Beijing, jointly hosted by Cyberspace Administration of China, the State Commission Office of Public Sectors Reform, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology and lasted for a week.

Mobile search became a new growth point of search engine services, and Baidu Search's revenue from mobile terminals exceeded that from desktops for the first time.

The Ice Bucket Challenge which originated in the United States became a worldwide sensation in just a few days. Among the participants were Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Google co-founder Larry Page and other high-tech tycoons. Later Chinese Internet moguls also joined them, making the challenge one of the most popular topics in 2014.

From Nov.19 to 21

The 1st World Internet Conference was held in Wuzhen, showing that the government attaches greater importance to new Internet economy and social forms.
