January

Directorate General of Telecommunications under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication was set up in Beijing and Shanghai and the 64K special line connected to US via Sprint Company was launched. Internet access service started to be provided to related institutions in the way of telephone network, DDN special line and X.25 network.

March

Chinese Academy of Sciences completed remote connection (with IP/X.25 technology) of four branches in Shanghai, Hefei, Wuhan and Nanjing, taking the first step for expanding Internet across the entire country.

Prof. Li Xing from Tsinghua University was elected member of Asia-Pacific Network Information Center (APNIC) Executive Committee for the first time.

Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) initiated the "Hundred Institutes Network Connection" project. The objective was to expand network to 24 cities nationwide on the basis of over 30 research institutes already covered by the network in Beijing, so as to realize computer interconnection among domestic academic institutions and connect to Internet. On such basis, the network was continuously expanded and gradually connected a group of scientific research institutes and science and technology related units besides CAS, becoming a national network that faced and served science and technology workers, related administrative authorities and government departments. It was renamed China Science and Technology Network (CSTNET).

The first group of ISPs was set up one after another, such as hexun , 21Vianet, CNET and Info Highway.

China Telecom started to prepare for the construction of CHINANET national backbone network.

On the World Telecommunications Day, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication officially opened Internet access business to the public. The Ministry set up a business center in Xidan Electronic Trading Building in Beijing. As long as paying certain fees and filling up a user information form, average people could become Internet users. At the same day, the Ministry also set up an exhibition hall with over 30 computers in Beijing Library to exhibit to the public use method and effect of the Internet.

CERNET launched its first 128K international special line. DDN channel of CERNET backbone network connecting eight cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Shenyang, Xi'an, Wuhan and Chengdu was simultaneously launched and realized interconnection with NCFC.

August

Golden Bridge Project was preliminarily completed, launching interconnected network (satellite network) in 24 provinces and cities and realizing interconnection with international network.

CERNET Demonstration Project, independently designed and constructed by China, was completed.

CAS "Hundred Institutes Network Connection" project was completed.

The curtain of telecommunication reforms was officially drawn open. China Unicom that had been existent for two years won uniform recognition of government and investors with its "China/China/foreign country" mode.

Jack Ma, together with others, founded the website Chinese Yellow Pages, which became one of China's earliest Internet companies. In less than three years afterwards, they earned RMB5 million with the website.

Ding Lei, a young man from Ningbo, resigned from Ningbo Telecommunication Bureau.

Ma Huateng set up the most luxurious four-line platform in the history of CFido.

China Trade News took the lead to launch its online edition, becoming the pioneer in covering news online.

Zhang Chaoyang returned to China for start-up.

China Trade News officially issued its online edition, becoming China's first electronic daily newspaper issued on the Internet. By the end of 1995, the number of China's first group of network media agencies reached eight.

Lenovo launched its first Lenovo server. In the next year, Lenovo laptop was born.

Zhang Shuxin established China' first Internet Service Provider, Info Highway, to help the public surf the Internet.

China Telecom started to provide the public with dial-up Internet access service.

China Scholars Abroad magazine run by State Education Commission entered Internet via CERNET, starting to provide people studying overseas with news and information in time and becoming China's first Chinese electronic magazine.

The thallium poisoning case of Tsinghua University student Zhu Ling attracted major media attention. Her classmates and friends resorted to Internet to seek help with disease diagnosis worldwide.

Students of higher education institutions represented by Tsinghua University and Peking University explored a new platform of study and exchange at campus BBS.
